IBS Conference News

March 7th, 2010

This is Teddy Westside Coming At You Live From The Shake Shack In Madison Square Park.
(where we just spent 45mins in line to eat but it was super fantastic food!)

Myself, Meekin, Nick, and Cruz have been here for 4 days now
We also spent 2 days at the IBS conference
In total we attended about 15 sessions per person
Hopefully when we return we will be able to bring so much back to improve the radio station

One hope of mine is that since we learned so much about a Radio Stations interactions with its campus and its community that we can be more forward with everything and that hopefully people will start listening to us more!

On that I note I learned that we are allowed to broadcast all over the internet without having to pay extra royalties!
This means that when I get streaming up and running this week that we wont be restricted to streaming on the campus only!

We are only here for about 2 more hours here in NYC before our train leaves for Newark International
(and I didn’t get us lost on the Subway!)
So we will be back in Alma around Midnight and then the following week be able to start working on improving WQAC!

Keep checking back as I’m sure I won’t be the only posting a blog about what we learned!
And I will also try and post once more to sum up what I learned!

We’ve had a great time in NYC and wish that we didn’t have to come back to Alma
But someone has to improve the radio station!
And just you wait, its going to happen!

Going to leave you all now
This is Teddy Westside heading out from the West Side of NYC

A Word From The Dark Side, I Mean… Tech Side

February 22nd, 2010

Hey guys its Ted!

Incase you didn’t know I am the Technical Director for WQAC, so I’m in charge of making sure everything around here works like it supposed to. So remember, if your ever having a problem to email me at ted@wqac.org.

First off I must apologize for this post coming a bit later then its supposed to. I am a Theatre Major here at Alma, so my social life and any extra life that I may hope of having gets sucked away in a matter of days some times. But thats okay, I enjoy what I do.

Now to let you all know whats going on around here:

#1 Project: Currently you can call the radio station and talk to the DJ or request a song, But you can not call in and be on air with the DJ through the phone like most radio stations. We have the equipment here to do this, but since I’ve been here it has not worked, so I am getting right on that and getting that working.

#2 Project: INTERNET BROADCASTING! Do you want to listen to us through your iTunes while your here at Alma in your Dorm Room? Well I am working on it, and soon (as in it should be up and running by the time you get back from break) so that you can either listen on the Alma network on the website or through your iTunes, since we all know radios are old school and no one really has one anymore.

Project #3: (Pretty Much Done, Just need some testing that will happen later today) Recording your shows! I’m guessing that you want to record your show for your personal use so maybe you can go home and brag to your family or friends! Well… Your in luck! But theres a catch, you need to bring in your own CD’s. CD’s get expensive if everyone wants to be recording their show so if this is something that you want to do, by all means just bring in your blank CD’s and I will show you how to do it. Want to learn how? Email me!

Project #4: PODCASTING! And sending those podcasts into iTunes U. Well… The word podcast says it all. I am going to be bringing it up at our meeting this week about possibly some time after break having a meeting with anyone interesting in learning how to do a podcast come in a learn. All Podcasts will most likely have to go through myself and EC for editing reasons, and if they get sent into iTunes U then they will have to go through the school as well. But if they go through myself and EC then it is possibly that we can set up a section on the Website that will allow everyone to access the Podcasts.

So thats pretty much whats happening in the world of Tech these days.

I do my own radio show Thursday Afternoons usually around 1 so listen in! And remember, its a request show, so call in or email me with your requests to get them on the air!

WACKY WQACIES

February 15th, 2010

Hizaboooo!

This is Renee, the tune giver of WQAC 90.9FM, tuning your ears to the new sounds infiltrating the music scene. HIZZZAAAHHH.

Since it is my occupation; I will take this time to display various talented feature artists to check out and play on rotation!

YEASAYER: ODD BLOOD

pe-yeasayer-odd_blood

- coming full throttle with a “weirdo electro pop” album, they have definitely developed their electronic influence for what has been considered one of the most anticipated albums of the year. All the while still blending reminiscent beats from the 70s and onward. Yeasayer is part of the new “native alien” bands that have deep underground presence along with complex electronic expansion.

Their feature track :

Ambling Alp (and my personal music video favorite)

Via Audio: Animalore

tumblr_kvz51qqrpP1qaxm74

Being on the independent scene for a while; Via Audio comes back around with a more electronic style and hip hop presence with their new album Animalore. And it is AWESOME. Funky, fun, and full of danceable beats.

Via Audio Myspace

BEACH HOUSE: Teen Dream

beach-house-teen-dream

And how dreamy it is! This Experimental pop showgaze duo is back again with harmonized ambient beats to fill you mind with joy and ears with splendor.  AND, they will be playing in Michigan parts April 1st in the pike room; CHECK IT OUT!

Be on the lookout for a WQAC/ACUB show featuring : ANBERLIN! with a special guest on April 10th

Keep on WQAC ing

Blog: Take 1.

February 10th, 2010

Hey everyone out there in blog-land.

We’ve got some great stuff going on at WQAC, Alma’s College Radio Station here in Alma, Mi.

The term has just started, so if you’re interested in being on the radio (which means you can decide what people listen to, talk about what you think is important, and ultimately make the station your own) then CONTACT US! (Contact our Programming Director, Carrie, at carrie@wqac.org.)

We have a lot of great plans for this term.  We’re planning a lot of great events for our awesome listeners, including a spring concert featuring ANBERLIN.  Yeah, we’re totally bringing Anberlin to Alma.  Think this town is too small for that? THINK AGAIN!  With the help of the Alma College Union Board (ACUB) we get to put on free concerts for AC Students.

Ok. Enough about the PR side of things for now.

Let’s talk about some other things.  Like…

MUSIC THAT I NOW LOVE BECAUSE OF WQAC.

-Be Your Own Pet

I like punk as much as the next person, but the way BYOP does it, it is not exclusive or unrelatable. I think some of my favorite tracks are “Heart Throb,” The Kelly Affair,” “Zombie Graveyard Party,” and “Creepy Crawl,” all from their album Be Your Own Pet.

-Passion Pit

Electro-candy?  I don’t know. I just know that this band makes me happy. That’s all I can really say about them.

-The Bird and the Bee

I loved The Bird and the Bee before I knew that WQAC was playing them.  But, the fact that I can find it in the station just reinforces my love for the band and the station that plays it.  There are no bad songs to be found on either of their albums or either of their EPs.

Other than that, the station has been pretty laid back.  All of our staff is working hard to make the station not only run, but run efficiently and for the listeners.  We’ve been discussing a lot of things, like radio shows and broadcasting based around sports events and community service projects going on on campus (Relay for Life, Songfest, Take Back the Night, etc).  But in order to do that, we need people to work with.  That’s where you come in.  If you are interested in being a spokesperson for your group, or you know of someone who is or would be great at it, have them contact us!  You can contact Jake Castillo, our Campus Affairs Director, at jake@wqac.org, Carrie, our Programming Director, at carrie@wqac.org, Annie, our General Manager, at annie@wqac.org, or me at meekin@wqac.org.  We are sure to put you in touch with the right people!

There is always more to come, so stay tuned.

Until next time-

Meekin
